Architectural Blend- Jazmyn McCallum

The intended concept behind my piece was to create architecture that represents each of the main buildings and statues I have to pass or go through in my daily college life. Each of these buildings are filled with memories that have made up my college experience thus far. I find myself constantly rushing towards them in order to accomplish the different tasks that come with college life whether it be academics, eating in dining halls, going to club meetings or attending campus events.

  1. The building which is located in the middle is covering up over half of the screen, getting a great importance. It is the student union hall of the campus UNCC. As the work progresses, the letters that show the name of the building gets hidden, making the building not just one type of building, but representing a general building.
With the building transforming, it is getting bigger and the interior gets warm lights.
In the front view, there is only one human figure statue, made of bronze, captured in a moment of running.

As written on the artist’s comments, the place is where she goes on a daily basis. It is a place of education and life. Seeing the statue as the artist itself, to me it looks like the statue is running towards the building, however stuck in bronze. College seems easy to approach, but getting through every step to graduate is hard. This is supported by how only the building is separated from the other objects; the statue and the small benches have the same lighting whereas the building doesn’t. Also, the composition is perfectly symmetry.

The front view ground with bricks is following a vanishing point, as well as fading as it proceeds. The building, which is further doesn’t match this blurriness. If it is intended, I think it would be good to give more distance among those two, like sharpening the building or giving more blur to the ground at the distance. The small sculptures are well aligned and the interior with warm light is perfectly manipulated. However, the roof top that has 3 layers remains as a question.

Since going to college, I could relate to the theme of work. The predicted viewer of this work seems to be college students. Everyone has their own problems and sometimes feel stuck while running to the point where one wants. Using the picture of the campus made me feel more close. Nice work (:

  2. The image is in a rectangular format. It contains what looks like one building, but I count maybe four of five in total. The front has a pathway that leads the viewers eyes to the building. I see there are benches and statues and what looks like the star/circle in the center of campus. There is a second statue in the center of the image that is posed in a running formation.

To me it looks like a little bit of an overwhelming photo. Which is good, because it could stand for college in general. As students we have a tendency to get overwhelmed with the amount of school we have. It also could stand for the idea of people racing to get to college. However, I think it could stand for the years in college where we are running the race to finish and graduate.

Your composition of the image is very organized and intentionally placed. Everything looks very well placed it’s hard to tell which building are separate from the original, good job. I love the little details like the circles under the benches and statues because it helps the statues stand out a little more. I love that you even put the shadow beside the runner again great attention to detail. I would like to see a little more sky on the image though to give it a little more breathing room. I think if you just extended your canvas size a few inches and added even a different blue sky, it would tie the image together even more.

I think its relevant today because there is a big dream about bettering yourself and getting an education. I think it fits in the larger culture because at a young age kids are asked what do you want to be when you grow up? They are then encouraged to go to college. To continue, a lot of jobs require having a bachelor’s degrees or experience and in order to get that we have to go to college. I think this image can go with the quote of “running the race of life” because that is what we are all doing, and college is a big part of that.

  3. The image is a landscape rectangle, showing a figure running towards a grand building. Stone monuments are to his sides, and the sky is beautiful and speckled with clouds.

The photo has a very strong composition, with symmetry abound. The buildings I recognize were composed of structures from the UNCC campus, same with the ground, monuments, and even the statue. The piece must be about college, or at last college at UNCC. College can sometimes feel like a sprint to get something finished, or sometimes a marathon ran at a slow and steady pace. The running statue invokes this idea strongly.

The photoshop work is very strong, the seems between the buildings and the ground is very well done. The only reason I can tell it isn't real is because I know the actual buildings first hand. The only part I have any complaints about is the spire at the top of the building being cut off; perhaps shrinking the building or adding more canvas so the spire has more freedom.

The concept behind the figure running, joining the Rat Race - literally a race - is well illustrated. I think it strongly speaks to a culture built upon a college education being mandatory, not just a leg up.
