Kelli Crockett Night Prowler

For my Night Prowler project, I wanted to create a nighttime landscape that encompasses an intriguing foreground, stars, and the moon. I had trouble trying to take this image at first because of how difficult it was to get each element in focus and properly exposed. This is why I decided to separate the project into three main images that I would edit together. I took the image of the stars on a clear night, directed away from the light of the moon for the best results. I took the picture of the moon separately, then the house. I edited these all together with a combination of gradient layers, adjustment layers, and hand-drawn layers to create a cohesive image. I am pretty happy with how this turned out overall, though I wish I  had been able to get a clearer image of the moon with my camera. I also think I could have used another image of stars with a threshold adjustment to add some more bright stars into the sky background, but I'm not sure if this would have been too distracting or not.

  1. 1) A astrophotography landscape of an abounded house in a open field far away from any sign of civilization. The foreground shows a beaten up path to this broken down home, the home as the middle ground has no sign of life, and the background is an astonishing shot of the night sky.

    2) I see this work as a critique to our current society. Expressing how hard it is to live so far away from other human life and to be on your own in nature. But if you do live far from urban or suburban areas, you are revealed with some gorgeous scenery of nature.

    3) I like this work a lot, i like all the subjects and scenes that are happening here. The path, house, open, field, and night sky are multiple scenes that the viewer can explore, trying to figure out how they all relate.

    4) This work shows how much light pollution are society has. Urban cities can even effect suburban towns from seeing what the true night sky looks like. If everyone could just turn off all the lights and not use any electricity, we could see this every night. It also shows how hard it is to live so far away from civilization and other resources that humans have to offer. There could have been a family or one man living here, but failed to live or take care of the house due to it being run down.

    5) This lonely old cottage in a huge open field far from having any neighbors lives in a beautiful and rarely seen landscape. The whole photo has multiple scenes happening that allow the viewer to constantly explore each part. The main take away for me however is the astonishing night sky background, revealing what out night sky truly looks like.

  2. Kelly’s night prowler photograph gives us a rich and intriguing scene of the night outside of a mysterious house near the woods. There are three main layers building this image; the sky, the moon, and the landscape with the house. The layers each bring a dark and slightly moody feeling to the piece. In the foreground rocks and grass lead your eyes to an overgrown and seemingly abandoned house, evidenced by the heavy damage in the roof. Above this we see a sky densely packed with animated and glowing stars, which contrast heavily between the nearly full moon. The stars also contrast with pink dusk just above the trees, which would make it feel like it were nearly sunrise if there were not so many stars, and contribute to the whimsical magical feeling that the rest of the image carries.

The image has a very subtle magic about it, though it is unclear whether this magic would be friendly. There is a level of tension between the house and the moon and the two almost compete with each other for the attention of the viewer. Although we cannot see what surrounds this house the image feels as though it is the only one for miles. The brightness and density of the stars furthers this feeling. The lushness of the surroundings also make it feel like a warm night, one where fireflies would be out and about. The p

I would theorize that this image is to be used for something halloween related, but maybe not for something scary. The house does feel as though it would be owned by a witch, or at least haunted by a friendly ghost.

This composite effectively combines three different photos to create a scene with incredible atmosphere and narrative. The composite itself is very convincing yet provides us with a scene that feels magical. Each element even alone looks beautiful and together Kelly has created such a lovely image!

  3. This work is a nighttime landscape with a clear foreground, middle and background. At first glance you see the abandoned house in the foreground that is well contrasted against the dark greens of the ground and the tree line in the middle ground. The top half of the image is a shot of the stars and the moon which balance the bottom half really well and the nice gradient in the sky helps guides the viewer to top.

When looking at this work it makes me think of loneliness, which is portrayed by the single and empty house in hill, or so it seems. Loneliness is usually a direct connection to sadness but in this case, the soft lighting, the rich greens of the ground and the trees, and the beautiful purples of the sky create a more positive feeling of peace and hope.

The image is very well though out and executed for the most part. The editing done to each individual image was purposefully done to compose a cohesive result. The lighting on the image does seem to be at the same time of night but this point brings me to the only negative comment I have about the piece, and which I'm sure it was an oversight. The lighting on the front of the house would have come from a really high light source if we take the shadow of the roof into account. In the case of this image, the light source, or what would be considered the light source, is placed as the background (the moon) which means the the subject in the foreground (the house) would be lit from the back; and this isn't the case.

Aside from the lighting oversight, the piece is well thought out and very well put together which makes the image very relatable to most as we have all driven through some backroads through North Carolina and the scene painted here is pretty much what we see. More or less!

Over all, the editing, composition, and all the elements work well together to paint this picture in our minds but most importantly, to convey a feeling. Loneliness? Pease? Hope? I say that is all in the eye of the beholder. I can say that for me, I can clearly say that being alone is when I feel most at pease.
