Night Prowler - Dominic

For this project I worked on drawing out a fire with using multiple layers of light drawing. Collaging them together to create a life like picture of fire. I was aiming to make the fire look as organic as possible, as well as the surrounding. Making sure light hit areas where it should, being able to see through the fire, and making the hotter area brighter and warmer than the rest. All of this was done with just glow sticks and many many attempts at drawing different areas of the flames.

  1. For this project Dominic created a fire using only the drawing of the glow sticks which was pretty impressive. The layout and placement I feel like are ideal to what was trying to be done. The picture starts off as really dark and as the fire gets higher and starts to spread more the image lights up at the very end leaving a realistic approach to the image.

I feel like this is easy to interpret. He was going for a campfire feel using only glow sticks and having the flames drawn out at different angles.. At first glance this did look like a actual fire and then as I read the description, having them drawn using glow sticks really blew my mind because it felt so real. I like the way this looks and feel but if really wanted to go for a organic feel I think making the drawing of the flames more lose and having those curves in them makes it feel like a actual flame. Because fire is really “uncontrollable” so having them go a little bit of everywhere really helps.

To me I felt like this would have been perfect if maybe something was being cooked maybe like a s’more and showing how it gets crisp over time. But overall I think this is pretty good and the concept is very successful. Having the middle area stand out as the hottest section of the fire really gives it that organic feel. Another route that could have been done was start off with an actual small flame and then turn it into something else. Having those streaks along the sides of it and making it bigger would have gave it another organic feel and then also having the charcoal rocks show a tad bit more would have also gave it that feel.

Fire to me is something that is uncontrollable to a certain extent. It is one of those things where based on our culture it is somewhat scary at first if not controlled. But when it is, it is turned into something beautiful and fascinating to see. I think that is one of the more reasons why campfires and fire pits are used today. Not only does it keep you warm but that sense of feeling in control of a substance so destructive, to me that is pretty calming and extraordinary.

In conclusion, I felt like what the artist was trying to accomplished worked. Not only did it feel organic but the use of glow sticks drawing the fire was surreal. Really the only thing I could see that could be fixed was adding a second element to it showing the cooking of something or having a actual flame in the lower section of the pit and expanding out while more of the charcoal is showing but it could really go both way and I feel like the route choose here works. Good Job!
