Transformative Portrait - April Lin

  1. The composition really draws me to the top right of the image, the larger mushroom, then leads my eyes to the rest of the composition below it. The vibrancy of colors along with the play on the scale of the mushrooms and person is really interesting. The image has almost a painterly feel to it because of how the intense colors blend with the textures used.

From the use earth tones and scaling of objects this image has sort of a fantasy feel to it, from the way the person is standing in the photo it looks as if someone is going on a adventure, and the larger mushroom in the top right holds some sort of importance because of the shift from red to yellow background to make that mushroom stand out. This also gives a sense of mystery because the viewer doesn't really know the story behind this but can lead to the viewer giving their own tale as to what the person in the image is searching for.

Overall I think this was well done, I think the colors used supported the overall theme of the image. Even though we can't fully tell what is taking place I feel as if the mystery of not knowing the story behind this image is was gives it part of its appeal.

  2. Looking at this portrait the first think I notice is the composition. The person at the bottom of the gif is the smallest and when zoomed out everything is incredibly larger. The lighting is more focused in one area which makes me believe is the focal point of this portrait. The placement of the jellyfish gives the portrait movement and does not make your eyes stay in one place but this also takes away from the actual person in the photo.

This portrait gives me a sense that you are adventurous and you are going on a journey to explore something new. Making everything larger in scale makes me think these are challenges that you are trying to face. I enjoyed the picture and you used your photoshop skills to show the different uses of how to create a story.

  3. I think the composition of this piece is very well done! The variety of photos used to make up the background were chosen well, and they are abstracted and manipulated in a way that the viewer can't determine what they are originally photos of, which makes it more interesting. There is a contrast with lighting within the orange and yellow parts which is very eye-catching. The scale of the jellyfish compared to the scale of the person standing at the bottom is intriguing and creates a unique composition.

If I had to interpret this piece, I would say that the point was to create a composition that has a sci-fi feel to it. Because it is a scene that you wouldn't see in your normal everyday life, and the person is so small in comparison to everything that is happening around it, maybe the artist was trying to make a statement on themselves and that they're always up for an adventure, or that they are always dreaming.

I really enjoy this piece!! I think the color palette works well together, and even though the scale of the person/jellyfish aren't realistic, it still looks as if it could be real. I really enjoy that the background photos are of random things, but they work really well for this concept when manipulated together. Great work!!

  4. The majority of the canvas has a bright warm temperature, with vivid colors. The image has great power with only using a few colors, red-yellow-blue-black. A person with a hat or bubble is standing on a rock, the shadow leaning towards the viewer. There are two jellyfish swimming.

I would say this seems to be talking about adventure, like a scene in sci-fi movies where the main character leaves and takes risks.
The creatures(human and jellyfish) all seem to be facing the light and go toward it.

I like the image of it and the texture that is used in the background. All edges are smoothly rendered, and thee use of light and color is amazing!
