Digital Wet Plate - Jazmyn McCallum

  1. The aspect ratio of the photo is unique in its sharpness. It seems like this could be a frame out of a movie, due to the aspect ratio. There's strong contrast between the dark darks (hair, glasses frames, pants) and the bright brights (shirt, book pages). The wet plate damage is subtle but evident, this is a good thing. Too much can overdo it and make it seem unauthentic. The depth of fiend is close in, due to the blurring of the background. Whether this is real or altered doesn't matter, it makes the composition stronger.

  2. I think the subject of this photograph is captured in a way that creates a kind of mysteriousness, what with their sunglasses covering their eyes and their casual sitting pose, which I find intriguing. Also, the location and the fact that there is nobody else around adds onto this air of mystery. The photograph appears candid, which makes it seem as if the subject is unaware of their photograph being taken. The way the subject is also being framed by the two chairs in the front creates a strong focal point. The texture that is overlaid on top of the photograph was a good design decision because it creates the old time feel effectively. I appreciate the small details, like the faint fingerprint near the top right corner, to make it seem more authentic. I know I struggled with using the wet plate Photoshop brushes, but I think you did a great job at creating the framing around the image. I would have liked to see you push that even farther with even more use of the brushes! Overall, great piece!!

  3. For this project I wanted the concept of my image to show how education for African Americans has changed over time. There was a period of time where it was extremely uncommon for people of color to go to school, let alone know how to read. There were many cases African Americans had to fight for opportunity of equal education as their counterparts such as the case of Ruby Bridges and Brown vs. The Board of Education. This transition in education has allowed African Americans to improve and utilize their academic skills to help solve problems in society. I chose to make my composition consist of an African American female reading because it is something that is seen as an ordinary activity if one were to see it in this day and age. However, if this were something seen in the 18th or early 19th century it would be deemed as unordinary or questionable.
