Old Is New - Andre Powell

For this project, I struggled at first trying to find something that wasn't modern-day. I then decided to drive down back country roads and came across this pasture beside an old abandoned home and fell in love. I liked the thought of capturing something non-man made, for the most part.

  1. This photo has a lot of potential. You can't tell that those are cows in the background so I wish you would have come in a little closer in the composition. As far as the wet plate aspect of this it's pretty weak. The brush strokes, in the right hand corner especially, don't blend and don't look like wet place. The numbers in the bottom right give it an archival feel and I think the scratches in the bottom left hand corner work well within the wet plate boundaries of this assignment. I would like to see more of those scratches in the middle of the piece. There is work to be done with textures and custom/ wet brushes.

  2. This was a good start to the project, I believe the textures could have been pushed a little bit more. Something in the foreground would have helped pull this image together more. The wall texture works well in the image but maybe mask it out on the canvas so it doesn't look like paper instead of glass. I love the textures on the left side just copy that over to the other side of the image.

  3. The image does look like it was printed on watercolor paper which I feel takes away from the old feel of the photograph. The black and white brushes in the upper right hand corner also look very graphic and photoshopped to me. Maybe if the brush strokes were made more transparent, it would look more natural. The scratches in the bottom left hand corner look very natural and if carried a bit more in the center of the image would help make it look more natural.

  4. For this image, I would have definitely explored a more varied use in brushes and opacity--not to mention textures. The image also needs a filter with a little more color to it and the edges need some definite work. While white is an appropriate canvas, the texture overlay gives the appearance of watercolor paper versus a contact print on white. Perhaps changing the canvas to black (I know some difficulties were mentioned but Google knows all ;) ) would have altered this effect and given more of a scuffed texture. Overall, the subject matter is fairly consistent with the concept but I do think that at least a few of the cows should be a little blurred just because I don't think all of them would be standing still for such a long period of time.

  5. Although I really find the subject matter interesting I wished the wet plate collodian effects were pushed a lot more than how it is now. As said in critique, it is obvious that the upper right hand corner is made by a photoshop brush and it really bothers me. What he could do to improve it is to smudge/blend it together or instead of using a really sharp brush use one that is feathered out along the edges and turn the opacity down a little so it's not so obvious. Just muck it up more and I think it will look fabulous! I really appreciate the "725" marking in the lower right hand corner.

  6. This photo has an interesting texture and I like the added depth with a radial highlight being in the middle of the photo. The bottom corner edges were well done and if the liquefy tool was used it wasn’t over done. However, the top I think needs more work and more texture to the photo overall. This is a quick fix if you just go crazy with the scratch brush you made and deciding which scratches you like and don’t. I think the photo does need a focus of some kind but the location is interesting and I like the sweeping motion the grass is making leading up to the hidden cows on the left under the tree, if you have a clearer photo of those cows could switch the textures you have to that one.
