Old is New - Elaine Phong

For this project, I thought it would be an interesting idea if I recreated a scene taken place during the Vietnam War. My family has a lot of history with this war and I still have a lot of questions to ask but it's always a touchy subject for my parents and grandparents. I'm just really thankful for all the sacrifices they made in order to come to America in order to provide the next generation with a happier life.

I had a lot of fun messing around with textures, smudging and blurring areas, and layering. My goal is to get the viewer to think it is an original old photograph taken during the war in the 1960s-70s

  1. I think the best part of this image is the texture and the treatment of the borders. The attention to minor details is what makes this so appealing and most similar to a wetplate. I do agree that a bit more use of blurring at least the left side of the person because of the posture with such a long exposure. A bit more destruction to the middle of the image wouldn't hurt but overall a great solid piece.

  2. For me the best part of this image is the overall theme. I really liked that explored something outside of america and dug into your asian culture. The scratches and spots really give this photo a collodion feel.(watch the right corner it starts to look a little repetitive) Another aspect I really thought was great was the experimentation I can definitely see that there was time and effort put into this photo!
    Great Job Elaine!
