Terrence Suitt - ROWE 2033

For my project I tried to remake/remodel Rowe.  All of my classes are technically in this one building now and so i tried to portray what it should look like being that this is one of the older buildings that are still on campus.  I added windows to give it a sense of a more futuristic look while keeping the stairway and breezeway to leave a history still behind the building.

  1. In this piece, there’s definitely a lot going on to create one cohesive building that looks contemporary. It starts out as the Rowe building that we all know, but the grass in front of it changes to a nice lake. The fountain that is on the other side of the grass area is now located in front of the building. The building now appears to almost have a 3rd level, with many windows that gives it a more contemporary feel. The building also jets out a little further on the left, and windows are placed on that area of the building as well. The stairs still remain the same, and there is now a large mural located on the right side of it.
I think the work is really dense and has great meaning behind it. It’s true that Rowe is one of the older buildings here, and UNCC, to my knowledge, doesn’t seem to have any plans to modernize it. I like the concept behind showing what it would look like if they did decide to change it, and you can tell that a lot of work was put into creating this because it actually does look like a building you would see on this campus.
This piece is very relevant to all of us art students because it’s something that we probably all want. Art students want nice things, too! I really like the small additions that were created as well, such as what goes in front of the building itself and the mural that looks very artistic to the left of it. The windows, in addition to looking modern, also offer some functionality since it would allow a lot of natural light to come in that I think would be helpful to painters and sculptors!
The work could definitely exist as a part of our larger culture. It’s relevant because of the updated architecture and people could definitely envision this building existing in real life. On one note though, people who aren’t aware of UNCC’s campus or maybe even students that don’t have a lot of classes around this area may have trouble recognizing what exactly has changed here or what the building looked like in the first place. For art students, the difference is instantly recognizable though.
I think this piece works really well. It looks extremely realistic and it truthfully is what I want Rowe to look like! I like the choice to keep the breezeway and stairway intact, as it shows the roots of the original building but it looks so updated and more fitting for UNCC’s contemporary vibe. I wish that the last frame was longer than .5 seconds since it’s so busy and I want to really be able to see the final result! The only critique I would have would be to maybe have us be able to see the “Rowe Arts” sign at the top a bit better. Maybe redesigning that to look bigger and more clear? Or maybe moving the rowe sign to the top of the building instead of in the middle? Overall I really enjoyed seeing this piece and I love the modern spin you have taken with the Rowe building.
