Wet Plate Collodion Project - Kelli Crockett

For my project, I wanted to depict an older looking instrument that is slightly out of place. I chose the autoharp because it was popularized in the 1950s, though in the context of a digital wet plate, you would assume it to be older. I combined this with modern jewelry as well, to further curve our understanding of when this image could have been taken just from an initial viewing of it.

From the library of congress, I used the borders off of two images from 1862. I created the rest of my textures using my and Jeff's custom brushes and many different blending modes.

  1. I feel like this concept is very powerful. The most successful being the uses of brushes. I feel like its not too much and its not too little. The right side is favored heavily because that is where most of picture is and it almost feels like someone has being grabbing it a lot on that side while the other side isn’t as chaotic. If i’m making any sense. I do feel like the border could have been a tad bit better, especially towards the left but that’s just me.

    1. I love the idea of someone holding on the right side a lot and this causing the damage to the image. It creates a fascinating narrative on top of the existing image. I agree with the left side border, it seems more rushed compared to the rest. Thank you!

  2. The composotion and DOP of this portrait looks really good. The blushes and marks also look very realistic and make this piece feel like a vintage wet plate collodion photo. Only critique would to maybe add some motion blur on the fingers below, a bit advanced, but besides that this was well done.

  3. I think the is a very strong compostion. I love the way its centered and the expressions that were captured. The use of techniques in here were very good and I feel every thing is in place. The only critique here I would say is the DOF, I think the subject is very clear but a little more clearance for the background would be nice (for me).

  4. Hi Kelli! I think you have a really good concept here. The distressed look is great, and I like your subtle nods to this era, with the modern jewelry that you're wearing. The frame is good, but I think it would have been interesting to see maybe some cracks in the piece as well just to see a bit more depth. I think you created a really realistic piece!

  6. Great job Kelli! I really enjoy looking at your picture. I know you said you incorporated elements from different times but to me they all come together beautifully to create a great composition. Great job on adding the distressed borders, those too work fantastic with your concept.
