Wet Plate Collodion Project - Andrew Vongphachanh

I wanted to depict a look of desperation and worries. I wanted to try and convey the feeling and look that a family member writing to someone in the civil war. I used this photo of my uncle writing a letter that would later on be read to our family for a reunion. I used a wood like piece from my door and used it as a border, like from the library of congress photo. I added custom scratches and smudges.

  1. The editing to add distress to the image is so nice! I like the crack the most. If I had to change something, I would add more blur to the foreground and background to decrease the depth of field. It looks awesome.

  2. Your concept and final image is put together nicely, you captured a good moment of worry and anxiety. The editing was also well done and the sratches/ blushes look like an old wet plate photo. Only thing, like Kelli said, to make the DOP shallower, and also making the subject a bit sharper.

  3. Hi Andrew! I think your piece is very effective and looks like a wet plate collodion. One thing I think you could have improved on is showing the sharpness of any objects. You have a lot of objects in the piece, but everything seems to be "washed". I think if you had made the vases in the front be crisp, while the stairs in the back are blurry, it would have been even more effective. I really think you did a great job with the distressed look though, especially with the smudges!

  4. I feel like your technique is really strong on this one. And I think adding blur would have made it pop a little more especially towards the edges. The smudges and scratches also give it a better feel especially when it comes to a family photo.

  5. I definitely get worried from your image. The placement of your subject and the surrounding elements kind of make the picture believable to me. I'm not sure if your subject is just a bit out of focus but I think this work in favor of your concept and with the wet plate assignment. Perhaps improving the contrast on the image a bit would make this work even better.
