Kelli Crockett - Architectural Blend

For my project, I used this small glass chest to create a glass house. When I think of my home, I think of how many years I have spent there and how much I've grown. Because of this, I decided to make a cacoon and butterflies represent my parents, older brother, and myself. I like the idea of a glass house because it holds no secrets and you can see everything inside at once. After living somewhere for such a long time, you know it inside out, every detail, just like looking through glass.

  1. Looking through and observing the piece itself, I believe that it has a great composition and the lighting coordination was a nice touch. Seeing the transformation of the chest turning into a nest for butterflies was a great idea and I believe it represents what you were trying to tell perfectly. The depth of field really makes the composed image itself stand out and the use of color grading, lighting and shining texture gives it that pop.

When I was first looking through and watching the gif go through its timeline I was wondering about the butterflies and maybe making a home with other butterflies. I wanted to think that they had found an empty little chest and had wanted it to make it into a new home where more of them could go and find a new home. When reading what was being interpreted I thought that I had almost got what was being represented and I felt this was a good sign, how well throughout and how good the execution was.

Examining through the work itself I felt that everything fit well with the composition and it didn't have any mistakes that you could see right off the bat. The use of lighting effects really gives it another touch of the moment and it's as if it were taken right then and there. The use of shadows and highlights were very well done and having to make around the butterflies and get the correct reflection was a good touch which made the piece stronger and more realistic. I really enjoyed how the chest was made into a bigger chest which had been given more layers to it adding to the interpretation of having a house with people.

One way I see what is being interpreted here and relating it to our culture is, when growing up we live and learn from our family members, then a certain amount of time passes and we start to become our own person which we go out of our way to explore more about ourselves. We move away from our old teaching and move onto different things trying to find more and wanting to learn more. I think it is important to take a step back from having to keep moving forward and to think about the past and sometimes go and revisit the people that got you to where you are in the present day, and with the increasing rate of mental health issues I think it's important for people to slow down and take a break.

In summary I think this piece could have many meanings to it but what I had experienced gave me the sense of nostalgia and wanting to take a break from moving forward once in a while. I thought the piece was well put together and had a great representation for what it wanted to interpret and I believe that it was done right here.
