Isabella Gagliardo - Under the Influence

  1. When looking at both works the first thing I notice is the subject and black and white paint strokes and both pictures are black and white. The first picture shows the subject looking down and being covered with white paint strokes but there is a hint of black or grey running down her eyes and also covering her head. In the second photo, it is the opposite. The subject is looking up to the left with black paint strokes surrounding the subject with a hint of white covering most of her face. Both images are very similar but they are different enough to be able to tell a different message from each.

When viewing both images together, it reminds me of a yin and yang symbol. On the first image, it shows the subject surrounded by the white but it has a little black in their face. In the yin yang symbol white means good or purity and black means evil or darkness but when you put both together neither one can coexist with the other. The subject is also covering herself almost which could mean she is hiding herself from something. In the second photo, it is the complete opposite. The subject is looking up to the left out the distance. The black surrounding them could mean a cloud of darkness is surrounding them but with the small white surrounding their face could mean hope or positivity. Overall, I think the two images together could mean a battle between light and dark or battle within yourself.

I think the design is simple, there is not much of a technical level when it comes to Photoshop work but the photos of the subject are both clean, clear and captures the message the artist was trying to give. The black and white paint strokes felt intentional from the way they were place to where each color went. In addition, the use of black and white furthers the message. I do believe the Photoshop is convincing everything is balanced and all the elements work with each other.

I do believe this work is successful with its meaning (if my meaning was correct or close). This can relate to a bigger cultural issue with everyday people. There is no one who is pure or evil, purity and darkness are meant to coexist with each other and transform us. I believe this is meant to teach us we are balanced.
