It looks to me as though there is a subject in the center of the light streaks. The subject is on one knee with its arms stretched out, this to me is a powerful stance. There are multiple colors in the light streaks, maybe made by glow sticks? Underneath all of the glow action there is a gravel road in a forest. This composition is centered at first glance but because of the glow streaks your eye moves around the photo.
My first impression of this work was “this reminds me of Avatar the last Airbender”. So the subject in this photo could be trying to harness the lights and that's why they are swirling all around them. With the background image being dark and eerie the subject could be entering a battle of some sort and is summoning the lights to help them.
I believe this work is creative, and I think the way the subject is posed helps with setting the stage for audience interpretation. I think the photoshop work is convincing and the compositing of the lights looks great. The way you composited the background is such a small detail but it did not go unnoticed and looks fantastic.
Yes the work is successful, you utilized the lights streaks to your advantage and painted a picture. I am having a hard time relating the work to larger cultural issues, the only thing I could think of goes back to my Avatar interpretation. The world right now could use an Avatar to come save the day, but when the world needed him most he vanished.
