Under The Influence - April Lin

  1. The work seems cohesive, as they are shot in the same area with the same street like feeling. In the photographs I see a stop sign and a speed limit sign as the main focus for the two images. The bright red stop sign really catches your attention in the middle of the street. I also see a lot of trees and a street. This could possibly have been shot in a neighborhood. The images do look very similar. They do look shot in the same area with the same lighting.

When these photos are viewed together they give the impression that the signs are in an area that don’t make sense or are unusual. For example, the stop sign should be on the side of the street, by putting it on the middle of the road it is made sure to be seen by everyone. As well as the speed limit sign, in this case there are two signs. One sign is pointing down saying speed limit as the other says the number. In this case the sign is supposed to be almost not as noticeable as it takes a second step to look down.

I think the work and the idea behind the photos is really creative and thought out. The message comes across well to the viewer. Although possibly adding more to the photo could enhance it more. The speed limit sign feels really well photoshopped and places correctly, although the stop sign could have some more editing on it. The lighting is a little harsh on the stop sign. Possibly waiting until the sun sets so there aren't a lot of harsh sun and shadows or just editing the exposure of the street sign a little more. Because the speed limit sign was placed in the shade it does not look out of place. The shadows added to the street sign do help make it look more realistic.

I do think this work has a bigger meaning to it than just street signs in the middle of the road. As I said before I think it has to do with people not following simple driving instructions that it needs to be in their face or said multiple times to catch their attention. The photos do seem successful just paying more attention to the details of light will make it even better!
