Under the Influence- Kristen Campbell

  1. In these two images, there are a few qualities that each composition shares. In regards to color, both compositions mainly have this muted tone with splashes of vibrant, mainly primary colors placed here and there. This is more exaggerated in the second image with the main figure looking at her skeletal hand. The clothing on both subjects of the works lack saturation and appear black. In addition both works seem to put the figure of interest in the center of the composition. There are a few blurs in the background objects, possibly to be less distracting for the viewer. The addition of subtle textures in the backgrounds of the two pieces give each work this authentic style that’s engaging for the viewer’s eyes. Although the two images do have their similarities, they do not appear too identical to one another. They share similar approaches to the overall compositions, but each work clearly shows different concepts.
When viewing the works side by side, I presume they are about the journey of the girl in both works. She appears like she is in this reality that differs from the reality the viewer is most familiar with. It’s as if the viewer is getting an idea of what it’s like on the inside for her, physically and mentally. This is exemplified by the second piece when you see the skeletal arm and leg, something that is usually covered by the muscle, blood, tissues, and skin of the body. The color choice and appearance of the background is similar to the veins of the body and the blood pumping through them. She examines her hand as if there is more to it than what we typically see. This could possibly be her wondering about the internal components that allow her hand to operate in the way it does. The first image contains splashes of color and light coming from her phone that also encompass her head. This could represent the intense effect that our phones have on our minds, or in this case, her mind.
The works do show a unique and imaginative exploration of the subject. It is as if the artist has combined elements of reality and the unordinary in a deliberate way to make it appear authentic. The inclusion of different visual cues such as the skeleton body parts, the vein-like background and the blurred face allow the viewer to consider if this piece is about the mind and body. The Photoshop techniques are convincing. The blurring of the background objects help us see that the sharper images are what are being focused on such as the phone and the figure sitting down on the floor. As mentioned before, there are different components that feel deliberate to get the message of these works across such as the vein-like background, the skeleton parts and the phone light. The face being extremely blurred while looking at the screen is a bit confusing for me. It could possibly be about our phones blurring our perspective on reality? Although there is no one clear light source in these two works, this gives it more of an intriguing appearance since the composition is not something you would necessarily see in real life.
These artworks are successful in regards to portraying this idea of an alternate reality depicting the mind and the body. Most of the components of each work feel like they were put there intentionally by the artist. This is a creative and unique approach to an abstract concept. Both works seem to comment on different cultural issues. The first work seems to comment on this issue of our phones in relation to our minds. The blurred face could represent our blurred sense of reality when we become too engaged in our phones. The second work could be a comment on our perception of life and death. As you can see, part of her body is in the state the body goes through after the flesh has decayed. The other half of her body is still life like. She observes her hand with this nonchalant yet contemplative gaze as if she is mesmerized with this sight of death, unlike most people who fear death. Maybe this is a take on looking at death in a way that is opposite from the norm (fearful).
