Under The Influence Inspiration- Kristen Campbell

  1. I was looking through our list of photographers and Brooke Shaden was the first artist that made me want to look at her work and watch her behind the scenes videos. Brooke Shaden is a self portrait artist and photographs herself as figments of her dreams and fears. Since she is the creator of these fears and dreams she has control over them in her photography. Being the subject of your own photos is cool to me because she is the photographer, the model, and the editor, it's like a big one woman show (she occasionally gets help but for the most part she does a lot of it). She has her own youtube channel that goes through some of her techniques on how she edits and does her photoshoots. Since she uses herself as the main subject a lot of her works are very personal.
Her photographs have themes of death and rebirth, beauty and decay, and man versus nature. This covers a wide range while also being in the same ballpark of this dark mystery feeling her photos portray. Before every photoshoot she writes down her intentions for the photo, she writes down the basics of what she needs to know; what the model is wearing, where they are taking the photo etc. , technical aspects about the shoot; where she is gonna get her supplies from, and the conceptual nature of her photo; how does the character feel, what sort of expression do they have etc.
Her photographs utilize texture and a fog effect to create an old grungy feeling. She also makes her final edited photos have square dimensions which makes the subject of her photos in the center of the frame, and makes them the main focus of the photograph. Most of her subjects are dressed in older looking flowy dresses, or they have a lot of fabric. The way she dresses with the addition of texture makes her images feel whimsical in a way. I think they are very intriguing to look at and they made me think about the meaning behind the photo, and made me want to know how she made them.
