Under the Influence- Kendal Edward

  1. Both works appear mostly cohesive. The lighting and texture of the photos are somewhat different, but both pieces contain a sense of magical characteristics. Both pieces contain the focus centered directly in the middle while the background provides more context. The pieces seem to be taking place in different seasons, the first in the winter with the light snow and the second one in the summer based on the clothing. I think because of the added in snow for the first piece there is a disconnect between the two pieces since the first work is also less saturated. There seems to be a relation between the two works using spherical objects; in both spherical objects they display a realm of fantasy. There is a sense of light and airiness to both works that emit through the pops of color and light. The first work seems more ethereal though with the soft light coming through the cloud and the atmosphere set by the drifting snow pushes this ambiance.

These works propose a more magical and ethereal atmosphere while keeping you grounded with objects that are familiar. I interpreted this work as someone expressing an imaginative mind and finding inspiration in the normal. It could also be interpreted as the magical feeling of the seasons since the two pieces seem to take place during different time periods. One usually associates snow to fairy tales and a sense of magic which the first peace may entail.

Overall, I think both pieces show unique concepts. To me the first piece seems more holistic compared to the second because there is less context. The rendering for both seems to be well done. I do not think it was necessary in the second photo to make the mouth seem open since it could have just been posed that way. I think the second piece would have been more interesting if there was more depth in the gum since it appears a little flat since the highlight are difficult to see. Another thing I would have liked to see is a little hint of movement from the betta fish. I think this would have made the piece less static and more interesting. For the first piece, I think you played with lighting well and that it set the atmosphere for your piece. Other than that, I think everything else was composed nicely and I thought it was interesting how you used the spherical shapes in two different compositions. It created a nice balance between the works.
The works were successful in coming across as the same concept. Although I am not sure what the overarching message would be, I know there is a sense of playfulness and dreamlike state. It could be perhaps commenting on creativity or fairy tales, but I do not think there was enough context within the pieces to pinpoint a specific issue.
