Architectural Blend - April Lin

My concept stemmed from the root of my paren't birth place. My dad is from Fuzhou, China and my mom is from Taipei, Taiwan. I wanted to combine architecture from both areas to reflect back on where they came from and how their different backgrounds mesh together.

  1. Looking at the image I can already see the different cultural influences that make up the image. First, I see the focal point of the image, the tall building which may be a hotel or apartments. Next under the building I see what looks like a cliff or a mountain, next I see traditional Asian stores lined next to the cliff. Next in the very front of the picture there is a street filled with motorcycles and cars. Next, on the very left is a tunnel that seems like it is going inside the cliff and last is the huge city in the background.
What I believe the image means without looking at the description I think the artist is trying to combine her culture and landscapes from where she is from or her parents into one picture. The different landscapes and architecture combined into one show that she is taking pieces from the city life, the landscapes, the different architecture and showing the audience the different things that make up where she is from and her culture.
When evaluating this piece, I do believe that the message was conveyed very clear. Reading the description under the image I guessed the message the same as the way she wanted the viewer to interpret the image. She wanted to show how the different cultures, in this case Chinese and Taiwan culture, and how they mesh together to show who she is and where her parents come from and I believe that is the message when evaluating this photo.
Blending two cultures together and being proud of who you are is more important than ever. Our culture is starting to become more accepting and new generations are staring to become proud of themselves and where they come from.
