Scale Exaggerated- Jazmyn McCallum

  1. In the image, I am looking at a mailbox, I see different little details. A person in the main box, a suitcase, pegs or steps leading up the mailbox, and transportation services on the mailbox. The mailbox is in the center of the image, but the way it is set up the main subject is set off to the left. The image is evenly light which helps strengthen the image.

To me the image seems like a form of escape. Longing to go other places or waiting for the chance or opportunity to go somewhere else. There are visual clues that set up the image to help the viewer interpret the work. Such as transportation services or the suitcase next to the person in the image. Even the body language of the person is a hint of what could be going on in the image.

I would like to see the figure and suitcase a little larger in the mailbox, the opening of the mailbox looks large in the image, so the main subjects get a little lost. The cars and trashcans in the background are a little distracting, so I would like to see a little more depth of field. I think if the background was more blurred, you could still have the urban setting, but it wouldn’t be as distracting. The set up you have now looks good, but if you wanted it take it a step farther you could change the background. Overall, you did a good job, I like that you enhanced the color of the mailbox flag because it makes it stand out a little more.

I think your work was successful. With everything going on right now with the lock down and everyone having to stay inside, it speaks to the longing of wanting to travel to different places. It speaks to waiting to go to different places and see different things. So, I think the work was successful in that aspect.

  2. For Jazmyn’s piece she has placed herself inside of an open mailbox. The red flag on the mailbox has been lifted up indicating that the mail is ready to go out. There are small elements added onto the mailbox like the icon of the up arrow and the delivery truck as well as text, “transportation services”. Another additional element are the bars that have been added onto the side of the mailbox along the side and the base. This additional element indicates how the person was able to get inside the mailbox. The main focus of the piece is the mailbox and the contents inside since it takes up most of the frame. The red flag’s contrasted red also helps bring the viewers attention to Jazmyn and her luggage.
This work is a representation of someone who wants to travel to a destination away from the normalcy of home. The atmosphere around her is dull and in our eyes very ordinary. Her expression is also an indication of boredom and uninterest in her surroundings. By placing herself in the mailbox along with her suitcase, there is a clear indication of travel. There is also an association to receiving postcards which are usually from travel or sent from far distances. But in this case, it is evoking the opposite gesture. She is the one that once to be sent far away to somewhere new.
This piece reads pretty clearly because all of the elements were composed very well. I think the idea of bars along the mailbox were creative but were difficult to understand at first glance. But the longer I looked at the piece, I came to realize what they were there for. For the background, I think it would be more impactful to lower the saturation to increase the dullness. The blue trash bin is somewhat distracting because of how bright it is and because the red flag leads the eye to it. But overall, I think the composition was done pretty well.
I think this piece is successful and can talk to anybody. Everyone has a desire to travel, whether it be super far or just somewhere different. I think we do find our surroundings dull sometimes and want to experience somewhere new.

  3. In the final product, what I am seeing is a background that is outside, the main subject is a mailbox with a person in it who seems to have a suitcase next to her while her facial expression looks either bored or lost. The red flag on the mailbox is also up and I see a label on the side that reads “Transportation Services”. The color in the picture is warm and it looks like the time is in the evening.
Interpreting the work, I believe the overall meaning of the final piece is waiting to travel to new places. I believe the artist does a good job making visual clues so that the viewers can understand. The main clues in this piece is the mailbox that takes up most of the picture, the luggage next to the person sitting in the mailbox, the facial expression of the person sitting inside the mailbox and the transportation label sitting of the side of the mailbox.
We all know that the mailbox is a way that we can transport letters and packages from one place to another, person to person. The use of making the mailbox something other than transporting mail and actually transporting a person is a great way to be interpreted as an airplane or something that can be used to transport people. The Photoshop in the piece is really well done, from the shadows to the placement of the label to the side of the mailbox, the Photoshop is very convincing. Everything in the piece feels like it’s intentional. The use of shadows to make it feel like the person is actually siting there is realistic the only thing that may be a problem is the way the suitcase is angled in the mailbox but other than that the lighting, shadows, and composition is convincing.
What I believe make artwork successful is if it makes the viewer think and be able to interpret the work. This piece I believe succeeded at that. I believe this can relate to a larger cultural issue, especially today during the outbreak and the stay at home order. It makes us feel trapped and want to reach out to others and to travel to other places and experience new place and things.
