Isabella Gagliardo - Scale Exaggerated

  1. In this image there is a man with casual clothing that is pushing a page in a book. The book and the pages are larger than the man himself which is contrary to the normal perception of the size of a man compared to a book. It is not clear of where the light is coming from. It appears as though the light is focused on the books in the center. Perhaps the light is coming from the direction of the viewer. The addition of the man’s shadow on the page pushing further away from the viewer helps support this claim. The shadows are even harsher under the large books that he is standing on which gives this composition a greater sense of contrast. The color scheme of this work is mainly neutral with a few primary colors scattered around here and there.
I interpret that this piece is about gaining knowledge. Books are scattered all throughout this image and books typically signify information. The more books present, the more information they have to offer. Since the man is so small in comparison to the books, he may be trying to immerse himself in the large amount of information around him. By showing him slightly struggling to turn the page, this could signify the difficulty that comes with trying to obtain so much knowledge (especially through books). Books are sometimes deemed as a boring source for knowledge since they aren’t as animative as technology.
This composition is creative because of the way the books and person are displayed in regards to scale. The choice of making a human small in comparison to the books is a unique idea for depicting knowledge gain. The photoshop technique is a bit convincing. The addition of the shadows help make this image appear more realistic however the feet on the page might need a darker shadow under them to give them more weight. Since the page is a different color it doesn’t exactly look like it belongs in the book. The arrangement of the middle page is a bit confusing while trying to understand the image visually. There may need to be a line depicting the end of the page so we can have a better understanding of what side of the man is pushing on. The light source is a bit confusing. At one point it appears as though there’s light coming from the right since it’s the brighter side of the composition. However, it appears that there is artificial light as well because of the highlight produced on the edge of the desk. I’m not sure if the titles of the books have any particular significance or if they are just supposed to be interpreted as simple books. Overall I believe the intention behind this work is clear; this idea of gaining knowledge through textual information.
The work is overall successful. There are clear intentional cues that help give off this idea of gaining knowledge through reading books. This could be touching on the bigger issue of how society has turned away from using physical books as their primary source of information. In our modernized society, technology is mainly used as a source of information. Many things that we want to learn can be narrowed down by typing a question into a search engine. This causes us to become impatient when gaining information whereas reading books require more patience to understand the material. His struggle to turn the page could signify our struggle when trying to be patient when learning new information through books. This shows that we need to learn how to take our time when absorbing new information. This could help us retain information much longer as well.
