Isabella Gagliardo - Architectural Blend

The concept behind this piece was to comment on the parking situation at the University and how there's not really a lot of parking for the amount of students there are, and they have torn up parking lots to make room for new buildings, like the new rec center. I Photoshopped the rec center as if it were coming up out of the parking deck and tearing it up.

  1. This photo is made up of a picture of the new rec center, the parking deck, and road cracks or sidewalk cracks. The cracks are placed on the parking deck around the bottom of the building. The photos were taken at what looks to be at a sunset time which creates a warm color palette.
With the way the cracks are placed around the bottom of the building it looks like the building is coming through the parking deck. Since the building is from UNC Charlotte this work could be commenting on how UNCC is building more and more, but they are building on parking lots. It’s well known that UNCC doesn’t have very good parking options and the rec center was literally built on top of a parking lot, and the university has not built anymore parking to accommodate.
I think you did a great job with your masking on the building, and you utilized blending modes to your advantage to make the cracks look realistic. I think the building could have been manipulated a bit because right now it looks a little warped. You could also have added another building in the back or maybe some sort of construction to really represent the tearing down the parking deck thing. Maybe adding a car could have also helped the viewer to immediately recognize it as a parking deck.
This photo exists within our larger culture in the way I mentioned before. UNCC has always had problems with parking and they built a new rec building on top of a very large parking lot and have not replaced that parking yet. UNCC is largely viewed as a commuter school and not having parking makes it even more frustrating than it needs to be. This photo could also have an even larger meaning about construction in general, and about the amount of deforestation happening around school to accommodate the number of students we have.
Overall, I think you did a great job. I believe your message comes across, but you can definitely push that further with the addition of another building or even a car. I believe I agree with your stance on campus construction, and how tearing down parking is not what we should be doing on campus
