Portrait Retouch ( Before and After) - Danny Lizano

My concept is a narrative scene which depicts a couples dramatic journey. The style reflects the exaggeration of a soap opera and presented in a movie poster setup. The retouching approach I took for this project was more of hiding the "behind the scenes" that goes on in such an elaborate photo shoot. I tried to create a dynamic composition, and create an intense moment with the absent of color and high contrast with the textured background.

  1. This is incredible. It's so well done that I honestly cannot say anything that I would change about this. Maybe add a little more stability to ground Cindy's foot but other than that, it really is so well done. Great attention to detail and the variance in tones is amazing. Beautiful composition and use of textures.

  2. Dear Danny,
Please stop being so good. Seriously though, everything was well done, most importantly, it was well shot. Your ability to shoot and plan these sorts of images is awesome, I know how much work and time this takes. Also, your attention to detail is great. I would love to see this image in some saturated color as well, I think it'd be interesting.

  3. Your planing and details in the hair, tie, etc really make this image successful. the dynamic quality of the composition makes it very engaging. All the smoke and natural textures are really nice and set off your figures perfectly. Good job!

  5. I do hate you, BUT this is incredible. With all of your images it's always very clear how well you plan out your final composition and I think that's so impressive and a lot more difficult to do then people would think. The details are completely thought out and the realistic-ness of the image is crazy. Good job. Be a photo major.

  6. First off, fantastic job! I love the overall cinematic feel from the photograph. The sepia tone really helped with the dramatic vibe as well. Your attention to detail is incredible, such as the way certain objects were positioned in relation to another. Great composition and a creative use of space such as her foot being so close to the branch but not touching it. The only thing that I would change would be to add more shadows to Cindy's dress but other than that great work!

  7. The diagonal composition of the photograph is very interesting. The background is also very interesting and is done in a way that it does not distract from the figures and instead adds to them. This is an amazing image.

  8. Your retouch was very whimsical and could indeed be a poster for some dramatic movie. I think planning ahead definitely helped with the model’s poses and how their outfits would move. The composition is very dynamic and love that the middle ‘ink wash’ is where their hands and gazes connect. The trees in the background also aren’t so weighted to take away the focus but enough to frame the ‘actors’ and give the girl a place to jump off from and the boy a place to hang from. Also the two straight lines of the ‘trees’ are the same diagonal of the model’s only emphasizing them once again. So well done I really enjoyed seeing the gif transform these elements together for the fantastical scene.
