Kendal Edward- Scale Exaggerated

  1. In this composition we see and girl who is sitting on her bed scrolling through instagram on her oversized phone. The over all tone is bright and pink. The lighting makes it look as though there is a bright window on the left of the composition. The composition feels more centered in the bottom third of the image but the extension of the girls legs help your eye move through the picture.
Since this photo has such bright happy colors, and a happy picture being shown on the screen, I get a positive feeling from it. I also get a positive feeling from the way the subject is posed, at least personally when I sit like that I am fairly relaxed. Scrolling through social media could be a source of happiness for this person. I think the phone is very large because it is very easy to have social media consume a decent amount of time out of your day.
I think this is a fun concept and you did a great job at executing it. I think the photoshop work is convincing and everything feels intentional. I think the angle you chose to shot your images at was very successful in the overall execution.
I think this work is successful in creating a hypothetical world where phone are bigger than people. I think this could definitely comment on a larger issue of how social media is such a big part of our lives. When people comment on that side of social media, how it consumes people, it is mostly in a negative light so I believe you were trying to approach it in a positive way.

  2. When looking at this piece, the setting is in a bedroom, cropped and zoomed into the bedding. We can see decorative pillows on top of a fuzzy blanket. There is then a cell phone propped up against the front pillow that shows the Instagram app opened on it. All of this is pretty normal, and then you get to the person that is depicted in front of the iPhone, scrolling through the app. The person is shown at a small scale, almost the same size as the iPhone, which is obviously the exaggerated part of the piece.
Interpreting the work, I would say that this is making a comment on the significance of social media and technology within today’s time. The choice to make the iPhone larger than the individual scrolling through the app was most likely a deliberate one, to comment on the fact that social media/technology is consuming a lot of today’s youth. Instagram in particular has a way of letting others show off the good aspects of their lives, and make others feel less than or insignificant compared to those they follow.
On a creative level, the work does show an imaginative exploration of the subject. It’s an interesting take on making a statement on the effects and side effects of social media. The Photoshop work is well done and convincing. The lighting matches throughout the composition, and the photographs work well together. I think the only suggestion I would have would be to maybe zoom in a little bit more into the phone and individual so the viewer can clearly see what the individual is scrolling through.
The work all in all is successful, and like I mentioned, it comments on a larger cultural issue with social media and the effect it has on society. More specifically younger generations who are much more impressionable and have more issues concerning their self-esteem.
