Architectural Blend- Kendal Edward

I wanted to create like a rustic yet modern feel to the building. The car helped out to make the building feel more rustic, as well as the store sign on the top of the building. I noticed the awnings were a very similar color as the car and were more modern compared to the reset. I thought that pulled the building and the car together. As for the pillars, I thought the two ledges were perfect for something circular to keep the eye moving upwards. To pull it all together, the sunset cotton candy sky did a great job creating the mood of the image.

  2. This work consists of one building on the corner of a street. The building itself has a unique shape, so that already creates an interesting composition. The changes to the building included two pillars by the front door, green awnings on either side, and a store sign on the front. Another change that was added into the original photo is the car, which is placed right in front of the building in a way that makes it seem like it is driving right past. The final touch was to change the color of the sky, and also creating a more dynamic composition with the addition of the clouds.

With all of these changes, my interpretation of this work would be that the artist is trying to create a sense of nostalgia or trying to construct something that looks more vintage or old-timey. The awnings are something that you would typically see on older buildings, rather than modern buildings now-a-days, as well as the shop sign that it added. That sign is definitely from a vintage, or older, shop, and you can tell by the typeface that is used, and the rustic look it has with the material.

The pillars also appear to be more rustic and older by their coloring, as if they’re dirty and have been around awhile, which continues to add to the concept. Finally, the addition of the vintage car helps create a more concrete narrative and pulls everything together. To further my interpretation and add onto the vintage and old-timey vibe, I would say that maybe the artist is trying to portray this place as maybe being a historic landmark, or maybe she has a connection to it that maybe stems from her childhood. The decision to add the old-timey elements was obviously a deliberate choice, so that is what leads me to believe it has historic significance.

Concept wise, the work is very successful in making sure the rustic and vintage feeling comes across, especially with the addition of the vintage car in the front and the shop sign. If my interpretation about the historic significance and the emotional connection to the building or area the building resides in is correct, I think that part took a little longer to come across. I think that works though because it made me look at the work and work my way around it and actually think about it, which is what you want to happen. As far as technical Photoshop aspects, the artist did a very great job at adding the elements onto the building; they look very realistic and like they are supposed to be there, and the new sky is beautiful. The only suggestion I would have is to spend a little more time on the shadow underneath the car.

As far as this work existing within our culture and how it relates, I would say that it goes along with the idea that most people are constantly drawn to things that draw up feelings of nostalgia or our childhood. I know for me personally I enjoy looking at photos from my childhood or visiting places that my family and I have gone to for years that bring back good memories. So, I feel like a lot of people can relate to this idea of keeping alive something vintage or keeping alive an old memory.

All in all, I think the artist did a good job at creating a narrative that makes the viewer think, and maybe even brings up feelings of nostalgia. It is a unique concept, and all of the different elements actually work very well together, especially because of the extremely well done Photoshopping. I think it also is a good concept because it is something that a lot of people can relate to, and it’s not just something that the artist understands and nobody else can get. Successful job!
